The mission of The Puppeteaching Project is to provide non-formal educational programs through the means of puppetry to improve the lives of children.
The Puppeteaching Project fosters the empowerment of children and youth through education by fostering self-realization, self-actualization and mobilization for change, shaping future leaders who will inspire social change.
The Puppeteaching Project engages in a participatory approach, involving young people in the writing and production of puppet shows, supplementing the performances with workshops and debrief activities.
The Puppeteaching Project's Mission Statement
The Puppeteaching Project was founded to educate children about important issues that affect their lives, encouraging them to become ambassadors of positive change in their communities. Puppet show topics range from Conflict Resolution and Gratitude, to Disease Prevention and Environmental Issues, putting an emphasis on challenges specific to a certain region or school.
The Puppeteaching Project offers professional puppet performances followed by an interactive workshop for elementary and middle schools.
The Puppeteaching Project also facilitates long-term projects with children and youth, training young people in creative writing, script development, puppetry and performance. The variety of roles available, including assistant director, puppeteer, technician and stage manager, allows each student to contribute to the artistic process in an area that they enjoy most.
To conclude the project, students perform their very own puppet show for their peers and their parents, about a theme that matters to them.
Why Puppets?
Puppets have the ability to reach children and break down barriers in a way that adult teachers cannot. As non-human characters, puppets are highly accessible to children, able to address difficult topics in a non-threatening and non-judgemental manner.
Kids are instantly captivated by the magic of puppets singing, dancing and speaking to them in a colourful and engaging way, which ensures that the lessons are well-remembered.
